Linksys ad-hoc wireless network problem

by a-baum . Updated 22 years, 10 months ago

I have 2 machines participating in a wireless ad-hoc network. 1 machine is a 466mhz XP desktop with a Linksys WMP11 internal PCI wireless card. The other is a 266mhz 98SE desktop with a WUSB11 ver. 2.5 (external USB wireless adapter). The computers are 25ft away from each other and my signal strength has never exceeded 13%. Also, within half hour of one of the machines being rebooted, I lose the wireless connection completely. At that point I can not ping the other machine. This is in a residential home with no obvious interference between the two wireless NICs. I have the latest drivers and firmware for both NICs. I have no way of knowing if the problem lies in one of the NICs or both, or if there is significant interference that I don’t know about. Is the ad-hoc (no WAP) design the problem? Do I need a WAP for decent performance? Anyone experience this kind of thing? I’d appreciate any help, thanks.
