My cousin has a Toshiba laptop and a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. When you first try to set the router up, you must connect it wired to the laptop so that the router can get configuration info. from the laptop. When we go through the set up instructions, we connect the Linksys to the laptop through the ethernet, the software for the Linksys tries to locate info. for the computer, but it returns with a message saying that it was unable to establish connection with the laptop. Mind you we’re doing this first initial wired connection, not anything wireless yet. Also, once this initial connection fails, the internet no longer works with the cable modem. You have to restart the computer for the internet to work again with the cable modem. After connecting the router, and letting it do its thing, but failing, I open Network Connections and see that there’s a new icon that says “Gateway”. It also says that it’s disabled. I try to enable it, but can’t. I know how to configure a router for wireless, but why this initial wired part is failing is stumping me. There’s also a Linksys wireless adapter card installed in the PCMCIA port when we try to make the wired connection with the router. Could this wireless card be interfering with the setup of the router? Under Network Connections, the wireless adapter is disabled. I’ve also checked to make sure the ethernet cables were functioning. They both are. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks a lot!
