Linux FTP Permissions

Hi all you tech wizards,

I’m having an issue pertaining to the setup of user groups on a Linux FTP server. It’s up and running, clients running on windows xp can access the server without issue. The problem is that if they connect with anything other than IE they have the ability to move up in the directories and access root. I’ve tried lowering their permissions but then they’re blocked from the server entirely. Obviously I’m missing something simplistic. Any help that can be provided, or suggestions that could be given will be much appreciated.
