I currently am receiving cable modem service on a COM21 modem which I have feeding into a 3Com 4-port hub. I have computers plugged into the other 3 ports, 2 running Win98SE and one running Mandrake Linux 7.0.
I have a couple of concerns, first being my need for a static IP. I want to run web/mail servers on the Linux box, as well as use it to host my domain name. I need a static IP for this and my ISP can provide me with one, but I need to give them my NIC’s MAC#. I used to have a dual-boot system on a cable modem, so when I needed numbers, such as IP or MAC, I’d boot into Windows for it, then reboot to Linux to plug them in. This machine is Linux-only now, so does anyone out there know how I’d go about finding my the MAC number for my network card?
Other concerns I have are with my hub (I think). The network card in my Linux machine is detected by the computer, but when I connect it to the hub, no green light comes on signaling a connection. Any ideas?
Last thing – Any hints/tips/tricks for making a Linux computer available on a Win98 network? Thanks!
