Okay, after much deliberation over the question of “Linux or Windows Server 2003: which makes a better VPN Server?” and after trying out a little bit of both (Ubuntu and Windows Server Standard) I have decided to go with Windows Server 2003. After coming to this conclusion I ran into another problem, my real lack of any REAL networking/server knowledge or understanding.
What I would like to ask is if there is someone who can maybe dedicate a little time to helping me get on my feet with Windows Server 2003. I’m a real quick learner and I did sorta get a VPN setup today, but it’s not working right. I can connect to it through the computers currently on my LAN no problems. I can connect to it on my cousin’s computer from his house no problem, but I don’t think it’s working right. I can’t see any of his shared directories and he can’t see any of mine. What am I doing wrong?
In the end my goal of the server is this: to help me learn, through experience and hands-on, how to run a server and operate a network more directly, to setup a file server for my family and friends to quickly send things to eachother, and to allow for a virtual LAN over the internet for the play of LAN games.
Right now my main goal is the gaming aspect. I think once the VPN is configured for gaming use I can manage to setup a fileserver easily. So once again, is there anyone out there that would be able to offer some serious assistance or maybe even an in-depth guide/ebook I can take a look at?
