looking for a disk recovery program

Friend has a old 486, the hard drive is listed in the cmos but he can’t access it at boot up .He wants to save the info on the hard drive but can’t even access thru DOS .Any ideas why the hard drive doesn’t register or is there a recovery program that he can use to pull the info of the disk?
