Looking for a fast motherboard

With all the different motherboards out there how do you determine which is best? I looking to build a new computer with AMD 1800+ or better in mind. Intended use will be for a Cad workstation. I have an idea what the other components will be. I’ve use Intel product up til now. This will be the first AMD computer. I looking for dependabily in craftsmanship, ease of installation of other components and compatabilty. As I mentioned earler I not familar with what is available for AMD cpu’s.I would like at least 3 or more recomendations if possible. Thanks for your help.
