loudspeakers fail to work

by john.a.wills . Updated 17 years, 7 months ago

I recently replaced my monitor. At once the loudspeakers stopped working. I tested the power supply line (AC/DC) on another PC with similar loudspeakers and all seemed good. I concluded that I had in replacing the monitor somehow damaged my loudspeakers, perhaps by breaking a wire inside the cladding. So I bought another pair of speakers and installed them (with a different supply line, as the DC voltage for the new ones was different). The new speakers do not work either. Clearly the power is getting through, because a light comes on in the right-hand speaker.

As far as visible things go, all seems fine. I use Seamonkey for email, and should get a tone whenever I start to download mail, when downloading is finished, and when new stuff arrives on the server. I get the visible indicator, but no sound. Similarly, when I try to play music, with Windows Media Player, all looks fine but I get no music.

I am running XP on ASUS Terminator P4 hardware. I seem to have the loudspeakers correctly plugged into the line out connector.

What should I try to restore sound output?
