lsass.exe problem

I have a Windows 2003 server which came up with a lsass.exe error and requested a reboot. Now the server wont boot back up. In safety mode it only gets to the login which fails soon after. Last known good configuration also fails. Any suggestions rather than reinstalling the operating system?
