We’re using a Win2K-SP1 file server within an NT domain. Both Mac and PC users’ home directories are stored here. We also store the Netscape user profile in the home directories. Intermittently, I see the following error in the System Event Log:
Event ID 12061: Session from user “username” was timed out and disconnected by the server. The IP address of the Macintosh workstation is in the data.
We have Mac OS 8.6, 9.0.4, and 9.1, and this is affecting all of those versions. According to TechNet, this is because either the server or the client was reset/disconnected with files open on the server. It doesn’t seem to be affecting a particular user or machine. The big problem is that if the session is disconnected while Netscape is running , it will crash and you can’t reconnect to the file share. We did not have this problem with the old NT file server.
I’m wondering if it has something to do with the way Win2K handles idle sessions. I’ve tried setting the local policy of the server to zero, which should equal infinity, as well as setting it to 1000 minutes, with no apparent change. I’ve noticed that the Idle Time column in CompMgmt.msc is blank for Mac users, which leads me to believe that either W2K or the Mac isn’tcommunicating that tidbit correctly. Has anyone else seen this or have any ideas?
