Mapped drive batch file

I am new to this so bear with me. I have seen several posts of batch files to map network drives after a VPN connection but they do not explicitly say what to do next. I need to know what to do after you create the batch file. Do you copy the batch file to the server then create a shortcut on the users desktop? If so where exatly is the batch file copied to.
