Hard drive problems. 60gig Maxtor. Was working fine with dual boot Win98se and WinXP. (both Fat32) I upgraded the motherboard and Cpu to an Asus and Cell 2.6 cpu. On first boot up all I got was disk error and asked to reboot. There were no discs in drives and was trying to boot to hard drive. Thought I might have to re-install operating systems, so tried Win98 first but came up with errors on drive ‘D’ (winxp Part) and could not continue with instalation. I then booted to dos and tried to format ‘c’ (20gig part) got nearly to end of format and message, Format Complete, unable to write to BOOT, format terminated.
Things I have tried are Fdisk, remove partitions, shut down, re-partition, try to format again, same thing. Patitioned as one drive and format but same thing. Tried Fdisk MBr, shut down format, same error.
Tried PC Motherboard tools for repartioning, Tried MBR clear tools. Tried MAX Blast diagnostic disc. All verify disc as okay. Max Blast formatted and transferred Win98Sys files to install Windows. but when I boot up with boot floppy and try to install Windows98 says error trying to write to drive ‘C’ and cannot continue
Try to boot fromXP disc goes to set up and formats drive but will not reboot normally just goes back to boot from disc then wants format again. I just tried this again but comes up with message NTLDR is missing but I had just re-done the MaxBlast set up hard drive for XP.
Well it looks to me as if the drive is okay except for the boot sector One of the tests I did do with Ranish says MBR cy-0-Head-0-Sect-1.
What have I done to this Hard drive and can the MBR be fixed. Please help, Son’s computer and do not want to have to trash a 60gig. Thank you
