Maxtor HDD failure

by twitchmyth . Updated 22 years, 11 months ago

I have a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 40GB ATA/133 HDD. I know. I shouldnt have bought the thing.

what i want to know is, while i was in europe recently, my HDD packed it in. It detects fine in BIOS but will not initialise during the POST process, orsubsequently detect in Windows. I’m reasonably sure its the electronics that have failed, rather than the drive itself, as there is still no noise from the drive, and i can feel the drive spin up when i check it.

Is there any way for me to recover my data? The HDD is under warranty, but I dont want to send it back to Maxtor because they’ll probably wipe it or just send a new drive.

Yes i should have backed up. I know this. I’m a tech support professional who tells people that all the time, but I was in a lot of a last minute rush before i left…

Any ideas or help would be appreciated.
