Meaning of Sony Tape Drive error status

We have a Sony SDT9000 DDS tape drive. Whenever I put a cartridge in it, even a brand new one, the “Tape” light flashes. Sony doc says this means “cartridge deteriorated”. Tech support won’t help.

What does this indicator mean? Is the drivebad?
