Millennium Edition – WINS (again) !!!

by rgilbert . Updated 25 years, 7 months ago

I am setting up a PC (Windows ME pre-installed) for a user to access our NT LAN from home, using an internal modem to dial-up to our LAN and authenticating via SecurID. Normally (using Win98) we enable WINS as well as DNS when setting up (this works) and are able to see the LAN, map workstations, etc. and have had no problems in the past. There is no NIC card in the PC.

In Windows Millennium Edition is does not appear possible to configure WINS in the ?My Network Places?. I add a secondTCP/IP, which then shows the WINS, but is gone after the reboot. In DUN both DNS & WINS can be configured, which I have done, but this makes no difference either. I am able to connect to the LAN, ping any machine but cannot map a drive nor see thenetwork. It definitely appears to be a WINS issue, but I cannot figure how to configure the TCP/IP for WINS.

Does anyone have a (proven) procedure that will work? I do appreciate all suggestions, but am certain all seemingly ?logical? steps have been tried. This seems to be specifically a Windows ME thing. Thanks.
