Missing or Corrupt Boot Sector

I am unable to boot my hard drive. It had Win 2000 Pro, however when I now try to boot my PC the system fails. How can I recover the boot sector?
I have another disk with Win XP which works fine and I can see the c: from within it, however if I attempt to browse it, a file system is not recognised and I am asked to format the drive.
