Mixed Server Environment – Windows Server CALs

I’m in the process of upgrading servers to Server 2003 from 2000. No domain exists but that is changing. If the network has a mix of 2000 servers and 2003 servers will the 2003 CALs still work even if accessing the 2000 servers?
