modem connection

i’m using a motorola sm56k modem. i’ve installed the driver. but, the connection of using the port to align with the modem port. it tells me to use port 1 or port 2. however, when i click on the modem icon properties. it shows me port 1, port 2, port 3, and port4. this is my problem, when i view the 4 ports. only port 3 and port 4 are the only port i can click…but, when i go thru the properties for the modem. it shows me port 1, port2, and Lpt1. please help me.
