Modem No Longer Connects – How do I fix it?

I have a Win2k computer that I’m in the process of transferring files from it to a new Win7 machine. In trying to get the new and the old to talk to each over a Lan I apparently disabled something…the modem on the old win2k no longer connects.

More precisely, the modem is correctly installed and can connect to my ISP via Hyperterminal (using Com3 which is what modem is set to.) Yet, using the regular way of connecting to the internet, the modem will not even reach the dial-tone point. Instead it gives “Error 628: The connection is closed”. I’m not sure (it goes by too fast) but I think it says “opening port”

Help, please….
