modem won’t accept commands

I’m getting the error message ” modem is not responding properly” whenever a “+” or a “\” is included in the win98 extra settings (init string) for a new Zoom model 2920 dual mode faxmodem. The latest flash upgrade and files dl’s have been installed. Using no init string results in a connect of 24000 bps.
