Modems

I just recently bought a laptop, and they installed a winmodem, is it the same as a 56k modem? I am getting disconnected alot on this system, but not on my desktop, I was wondering if this could be the problem? I wasnt sure if I should send the laptop back and have them reinstall the correct modem.
