Monitor goes “bezerk”

Periodically, my monitor goes “beserk.” It’s difficult to explain, but – without warning – a pattern of dashed and long horizontal lines fill the screen, eventually it shows what was displayed before, but it’s frozen, so it’s cold re-boot time. I’m using Windows XP Professional, have been all along (with this monitor)…is it software upgrade time?
