Monitoring the health of systems

I am looking at setting up at least one server outside the company firewall, perhaps at another location to remotely monitor the health of the servers and applications inside my network. The monitoring server will “ping” key URLs of the applicationsand systems at regular intervals and will alert the NOC team if it receives missing or erroneous responses from the servers. What would be the best way to do this?
