Motherboard

My question is likely very elementary to most of you, but here goes… I have a DELL PC with a Intel MB and 1.7 processor, 400 front side bus. I want to use a faster processer (2.4) but it wouldn’t work. I am seeking advice and location of stats on the MB / processor relationship and compatability. The 1.7 processor is either a Northwood or Willamett processor, and I believe that match is my problem. Can someone help.
