Mouse and keyboard won’t respond after l

Working on a Compaq Prosignia 330 with Win 98 as the OS. The mouse and keyboard seem to work while typing the user name and password. After logging on to the network, they won’t respond. Called Compaq and they suggested that it was a Novell issue. Any ideas????
