Mouse Cursor Disappears in Microsoft Word

When I use MS Word (2002), the mouse cursor disappears when I start typing. It reappears when I move the mouse, but I always have to look for it, when I’d much rather have my first movement of the mouse go in the direction it needs to go.

I’m sure some programmer thought this was a good idea. They were wrong. It irritates the hell out of me.

Is there any way to turn this feature off, so that the mouse cursor stays visible while I type? I cannot find any.
