Mouse Pointer Not Working

Win98,196Memory,40gigHD. I have a mouse MouseWorks) that will work with or without USB. When the PC comes on the hourglass is there but after that “NO pointer is there”. Checking system under my control panel shows its working and right driver. I have removed the mouse and loaded again more than once. Same thing it shows mouse working but it is not. I have tried with/without USB. Everything in the bios looks fine. Can’t understand why it was working one moment and not the next. Can someone suggest some options to try. Thanks
