Move from mirrored drives to Array 5

by casta . Updated 22 years, 12 months ago

Hi all:

I have a Compaq Proliant ML350 G2 that is configured like this:

(2) 18GB Ultra 320 SCSI drives configured in a hardware mirror array that contain OS files
(1) 36GB drive that it’s not fault tolerant.

The server is a Windows 2000 server SP4 in a W2K AD domain with all critical updates installed and it’s running SQL 2000 and some finance applications (Great Plains) the 36GB standalone drive is being used to store all SQL backups.

I have (3) 36GB Ultra 320 drives available and I was wondering if moving this installation to a RAID 5 would increase performance and reliability on the server in regards to SQL and in general.

Which is the best way to move the current installation onto a RAID 5?

I have full backups everyday using Veritas Backup Exec. However, I do not have the SQL agent to backup the SQL files which is my main concern.

Do I need to buy the SQL agent in order for me to move that database safely into the RAID 5? I just don?t want to break what?s not broken!

Server is up and running without any problems, but I am just looking for ways to make it faster and more reliable. Since I have 3 drives available might as well, this does not happen all the time! 😉

Thanks in advance.

John C
