MS Word 2000 merge data files not compatible with MS Word 2007?

Have been having one heck of a time getting MSWord 2000 merge files to work on MS Word 2007 (XP Professional).

Problem:

BIGGEST: After all is done, cannot save the changes to the Data File.

Opening MS2000 merge file very awkward.

What smooth way is there to do this? All my users do not have MSWord 2007 — most have 2000, and we just got a Dell with 2007 on it on the boss’ secretary’s desk. Now she cannot open the Merge files that she normally uses to draft pro-forma type letters.

Is there a software patch? How do we save the changes made from the 2007 in the 2000 data file (across MS2000 network onto “server”)
