Much varying PC internal speeds case no 2.

Hi!

Here you have the second case.

Case no 2. Quite new P4/1.8GHz desktop with Promise Ultra133TX2 PCI-IDE extra channels

This case is somehow a far relative case with the case no 1.

On this system I do have in use quite many 120GB disks, 3 work disks on the mobo IDE-channels (the 4th unit on these is a rarely used multiformat DVD-RW) and 4 back-up disks on the extra PCI-IDE channels. When taking the back-ups to the PCI-IDE disks, I have sometimes got one about 90GB back-up taken in just 1 hour, but the worst cases have been about 8-12 hours, and sometimes I have also been seeing the estimated time to be 1 day 8 hours or so, but then I did go on just some 10-15 minutes to see if the speed would be increased, but not, and did re-boot and got some more sensible estimated maybe 4 hours time for it. The tool used for this is the regular MS Windows 2000 Back-Up Utility, and the Win2000Pro in use is on SP4 level with all actual updates etc. And, mostly I have only 1 of the 4 back-up disk drives powered-on, to eliminate any other maybe disturbing traffic on the PCI-IDE channels.

So, what is actually regulating or having strong influence on the speed on these PCI-IDE channels?
I have been testing all this with at least 5-6 different types of ATA/133 cables, flat/round short/long etc., but always with the same level of results, also another same brand PCI-IDE card was tested with the same results, maybe I’ll still test with another brand card …

If anyone is familiar with this type of case, please give any comments …

Best regards,

Pete V.
