My broadcom utility states that no wireless connection is available

For some reason my broadcom utility states that no wireless connection is available and none found in range?
I am using a Gateway with windows XP media center edition Service Pack 3 and recently installed AVG 8.5 free edition. For some reason my broadcom utility states that no wireless connection is available and when I click on view available networks I get the no networks were found in range or if I am lucky I can only find the unsecure linksys one but still can’t connect. I am staying at a place with a secure WPA and know of atleast two other WPA’s in the area but none of them show up on my search for available networks. As recently as last week I was able to see both secure and unsecure networks without any problems. I have confirmed that my wireless is on (by hittin Fn and F2) so that is not the problem. Does anyone know what to do to fix this?
