National ISP that plays nice

I need to find a dialup ISP to support two purposes. First of all, to provide local points of access when I’m traveling nationwide and second, I would like the same account to also serve as a backup to my regular Internet connection.

Both AOL and Compuserve are out of the question because of their obnoxious and dysfunctional AOL Adapter that is not supported by the router that will establishing the dialup connection when the primary line drops. I also understand from them that the support life on their Compuserve Classic product is expiring so that is not an option either.

Any ideas? I haven’t tried MSN and don’t know who else is out there with all the ISP births, deaths and mergers.
