Need help reformating hard drive from Windows XP

I’ve tried several different downloads plus reading material but I just can’t get to a point where I can get to DOS to reformat Win XP. I want to do this because my system has a virus that I couldn’t get rid off. Any help will be deeply appreciated. Thanks.
