netbios problem ?

by jackthe . Updated 25 years, 2 months ago

Hi all,

I’m having a bit of a problem with windows networking/browsing and I wonder if someone can give me a couple of tips.

We had all of our servers and workstations on one switch (small
company) – 3 or 4 NT servers and about 20 workstations. I have just made the network more scalable by putting in an extra switch and router. Network now looks like this (hope the diagram turns out ok).

———
| router |
| |
———
| FE trunk link
|
——— Fe ——–
| switch |—-| switch |
——— ——–
vlan 1 vlan2

So now all packets vlan 1 <-> vlan 2 go through the router.

Vlan 1 has the servers, Vlan 2 the workstations.
We are using Wins/Dns on our PDC and only run IP.
The workstations get their IP address’s from DHCP, the Wins/NBT type is 0x2 (wins only).

Browsing has become noticeably slower, we run no win95 so master browser is PDC.

TCP/IP connectivity is fine, links are not dropping any packetsand have plenty left. Router cpu is fine, as is the trunk link. No errors anywhere.

Can anybody give me some clues as to what is slowing down the browsing??

Thanks in advance,

John
