Netgear Problem using a Toshiba Satellite laptop

I can gain a wireless connection with my netger wireless router but see the connection with the words unsecured network next to it. When I try to access the internet it fails. Can someone assist me with fixing this problem. If possible tell me what steps I need to take to correct this problem. It has worked in the past so I suspect something went amiss either by my making an incorrect entry or system virus. Any and all help is appreciated.
