network component configuration problem

(windows me) When I open the “network” control panel tool, then press the “ADD” button under the list of installed network components, instead of finding all four generic “types” of components to add, i.e., client; adapter; protocol; and services, Ionly find three. The “adapter” choice is missing.
Because of this I cannot add my particular adapter type to the list of “installed network components” and therefore I can not correctly complete my DSL setup and installation. Can anyone help me? Isthere a way to add that missing component category, and will that do it?
