I have an intranet server that hosts a sharepoint site, that is accessed from both inside the domain and externally from the internet.
The NIC is set with an IP of 10.100.1.27 but the netmask is 255.255.240.0 almost all of the other servers in this network are set with 255.255.254.0.
I have been asked to explain the reason for the anomoly, and apparently this was set up far enough in the past that there is no institiutional knowledge as to why this might have occured.
I have been thinking about it for a while, and I figure that it must either be a mis-configuration or a throwback to a quick-fix of a problem that has since been solved or gone undetected.
Anybody have any thoughts as to why this server and two others I can find our AV server and one that runs our blackberry software would be on a /20 subnet? All of their IP addresses easily fall within the confines of the /23 subnet.
What am I missing?
Thanks in advance, for your help.
