Network/DSL cabling

by maalderink . Updated 23 years, 4 months ago

I recently, got DSL installed into my house, i have had 3 computers networkeed together, the cables all go to a 10base-T hub, located nearby my main useage computer, this network works with file sharing and game play over the network. My DSL is installed in the basement of my house and i have router with firewall builtin and a 4 port switch built into it. I got every thing set up and when i use my laptop, hooked directly to the router with a 6-8 foot cable it works fine. I make some of my own cabling, and wired up two female jacks to the cable which i have running from the basement to the upper floor where tha hub is. The problem is that if i hook my laptop to the end of that run it only hooks to the network part of the connection, i have tried wiring it up as a cross over cable but this did not work. I thaught maybe it was the length of run and maybe the router couldnt handle it, so i bought a 50ft, which is about 10ft longer than the length run, and hooked it upto the router, then to my laptop, that works. I’m thinking that it is the jacks that i use. They are simple 8 conductor surface mount jacks. would anyone have any idea what would cause it to not let the DSL internet through?

Thanks
