network neighborhood problems

I have a number of pcs and macs on a LAN behind a router and switch which are in turn connected to a cable modem. All machines can ping each other and themselves and I can access the internet from all machines. However, when I open network neighborhood on any of the pc’s or try to attach to the pc’s from the mac, none of the machines are recognized. Any ideas as to why this is happening will be appreciated.
