Networking icon in sytem tray

I have a software that installed virtual adapters in my network connections. When I’m not using the software however I have the adapters in my system tray with red X’s. What can I do to stop Windows from puting disconnected adapters in the system tray. The adapters are not checked for showing in system tray when connected. I am running Windows XP Pro SP1 on a laptop.
