Hi there looking for help on the issues and any recommendations you can make on this scenario i am out of my depth so any help much appreciated. Structurally, the building is single storey with a steel structure supporting the roof and
a concrete floor. Effectively this means that the entire building is one large open area
which is then subdivided by a plasterboard walls to make the rooms and corridors.
The plasterboard is held in place by metal frames.
Requirements
Basically the building is divided into 8 areas:
1) Build area (with no current need for a network connections)
2) Fixed design area (where vehicles are designed and the designs printed)
3) Portable design area
4) Machine area (machines for producing parts, wind tunnels for testing, etc are
located here and need network connections)
5) Staff office area (with PCs)
6) Recreation area (with PCs available for Internet access)
7) Coffee area (with free wireless access)
8) Reception desk ? located within the coffee area
Build area
This is where the vehicles are actually built -currently within the build area there is
no need for network connections.
Fixed Design area
The fixed design area is used for pupils actually visiting the project,
The software is 50MB in size and licence requirements mean it must be downloaded
from a server. The design area seats 20 students.
Portable design area
This is done using laptops and server. The software used is exactly the same as that in the fixed area and there
are also 20 places (seats).
Machine area
The machine area is a specialist area which requires isolation from the rest of the
network (except to receive jobs and send results).
It would be best if irrelevant networking traffic was kept from this portion of the
network.
Staff office area
Permanent staff of the centre will be situated here as well as 4 desks for visiting
tutors. Each desk (10 in total) will have a PC, there will also be colour and mono laser
printers located in this office.
Recreation area
This area is intended for student breaks. They can eat or drink in this area. Free
internet access is provided in this area via wired PCs.
Coffee area
Primarily intended for visitors this area has good coffee vending machines and
provides free wireless internet access to visitors. I would like control over who uses it ? issue some sort of code for
logging in.
Reception desk
The reception desk is staffed whenever the building is open. The receptionist sits at
the front desk and has a PC connection and a mono laser printer.
Use
The building will mainly be used by pupils the students will load
and save their work to the server as well as printing out their work on a networked
design printer. It is anticipated that each pupil will load and save 40MB jobs per hour
and that, on average, one out of every 3 machines will send a 10MB print job every
hour.
Usage of the portable design suite will be identical except that it is
to be based on laptops and standard wireless network technology.
Due to the sheer size of the software, it isn?t possible to download it for use away
from the design centre or portable design centre. Instead view-a-banger software can
be used by authorised users (either from home or from other schools) to view image
files generated from their designs. To do this, users have to ?process? their design so a
smaller image can be sent over the internet. It would be helpful if access from schools
didn?t need a username and password.
Additional requirements
Staff working at home need to be able to securely view student records held on the
servers located in the staff area of the design centre.
It is important that the design area, portable design area (when back at the centre),
machine area, staff area and reception desk are linked on the same network, i would like networks in all areas to be segregated and connected via a
backbone.
The vast majority of pupils using the centre are younger than 16. It is therefore very
important that they aren?t allowed access to unsuitable material.
