Networking XP and Windows 9x

Since Windows XP home uses the Windows 2000 file system, does this mean that one must upgrade all 9x boxes on a LAN in order to get full use of file sharing capabilities in a network? Or is their an acceptable work around for 9x boxes to view XP/2000 files?
