New Backup Admin seeking help

I was recently put in charge of the backups at our organization and am having problems with the size of the backups. I am trying to establish a tiered backup solution but need a way to tell when all the files on the server have been modified without looking at each and every one manually. Is there a free report program I can run to get that information?
