New HD, old Bios… 20gb only rec. 8gb

Help. I have an Western digital OEM (White Label) .. which is actually just an MDT (magnetic data technologies) Hard Drive. I know all about the old Bios problem, but I am very, very weary about updating the BIOS. I have seen/ heard plenty of people saying how they trashed their mobo by updating their bios.

I know Western Digital has a HD utility (Data Lifeguard).. but it doesnt work on this Hard drive, cuz its not actually a WD. If anybody knows of a generic HD utility that is free, i would accept that answer first.. Hints on updating bios/ or words of encouragement on doing that would be appreciated though as well!!

So, i was wondering if I put in the USER specifications in BIOS for a 20gb hd, would that help? Or, how can i do this without updating the BIOS. This is a Dell Dimension xpsm200s machine.

Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated!!
