No tone at the other end?

Having problems with a wkstation. Using a tone generator on cat5 I find that the tone will not transmit through the cable. The connection from the nic to the cable is good except that when trying to create a profile for a user it locks up and I have to end task. If I set up the profile on C:\my documents\fsmith.pst I have no problem.
It’s when I try to use our netwk drive I have the problem. I do have access to the internet, and when I log in I see all of the drives showing. It seems as the problem is with the netwk at that location. When I try logging in from another station with the user’s profile I have no problem.
It’s only at the other station when I have this problem.
