Novell Network with a XP workstation talking to a Microsoft only PC

I am trying to run an application on a workstation in a Novell network that interfaces directly to a another XP pc that is connected through a switch. The other pc is set up as a microsoft networked PC. Everytime I launch the application on the Novell signed on workstation it gives me an error “failed to detect network interface card settings”. Can anyone help? Thanks
