NT boots to desktop , then crashes

Nt 4.0 on a Dell Precision 620 boot up,
I can log in and see my desktop well enough.
It will stay up until I try to do anythig else. If I try to run recover or install
I get a message the setup can not find any hard disks. Any thoughts on how toget out of this predicament
