Recently, I added a NT BDC (SERVER2) to our network to replace a PDC (SERVER1) that will eventually be reassigned a different roll on our network. After adding the new server, I restored all of the shared resources from a backup from SERVER1 to SERVER2. To paraphrase, I successfully recreated SERVER1. Then edited all users login scripts to use the resources on SERVER2 making the transition transparent to all of the users. Keep in mind that SERVER2 has twice as much memory and a much faster processor better NIC ? the works; everything about SERVER2 is better than SERVER1. Two weeks pass… Now there seems to be performance issues concerning access to resources on SERVER2. One example; A Microsoft Access data base on the new server takes forever to close after making modifications, or adding records. I did a little experiment to see if I could reproduce this behavior by placing a copy of the mdb file in share on the SERVER1, I couldn?t, under normal conditions, get it to act as sluggishas SERVER2. I also made a copy of the mdb file and placed it on my local hard drive, and as expected the performance of loading and unloading the file into Access was fast. All protocols and services are the same on both servers.
Do you have any ideas why (network?)performance is so poor on the newer server? I can?t for the life of me, figure out what?s going on without having to possibly reboot several times. Is it Gremlins?
