old bios

i am having a old machine .its CMOS supporting upto 4gb hard disk only.
it is detecting 10,20,30 gb hards as 4gb or less than that.how can i
over come this problem?and if i use a hard drive that is more than 4gb
is it realy worth,am i actually having the 10gb(for example)or 4gb?
