Only able to acheive 54Mb/s from Wireless-N?

Recently I purchased a Netgear WNR854T Wireless N router and a Netgear WN511T Wireless N notebook adapter. After repeatedly following the steps given I can only achieve 54Mb/s when I should be getting 300Mb/s. Any help would be appreciated.
